A fish is a sea creature that lives underwater. Some fish can live in fresh water or sea water. They have gills to help them breathe. They come in different sizes and shapes. Fish have been around for about 500 million years. In the beginning they looked like tadpoles. They were the first animals to have backbones. A fancy word for an animal that has a backbone is vertebrates. Fish eggs and fry are important foods for other fish, birds and insects. Fish such as salmon are predators. They hunt insects and crustaceans such as shrimp in the sea. Eels and salmon can live in both fresh water and salt water. You can tell the age by counting the number of the rings on its scales. Sometimes they are narrow or wide. Some fish have lots of colours so that they can blend into their surroundings. This is called camouflage.
